about the stress lab

The Study of Trauma, Risk-taking, Emotions, and Stress Symptoms (STRESS) Laboratory is directed by Dr. Weiss in the Department of Psychology at the University of Rhode Island. Research in the STRESS Lab is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and aims to improve our understanding of the relation between trauma - and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in particular - and risky behaviors, such as substance use and HIV/sexual risk. The STRESS lab examines mechanisms - most notably emotion dysregulation - underlying the relation between PTSD symptoms and risky behaviors. Moreover, the STRESS lab explores the ways in which cultural and contextual factors influence the associations among PTSD symptoms, emotion dysfunction, and risky behaviors. The STRESS Lab utilizes cutting-edge methods (e.g., experience sampling, psychophysiological assessment) and data analytic strategies (e.g., hierarchical linear modeling, structural equation modeling) to answer these - and other - questions. The overarching goal of this research is to inform the development of novel interventions for treating PTSD and co-occurring risky behaviors.

The STRESS Lab is located on the 2nd floor of the Shepherd Building at the URI's Providence Campus
